Starting a company in Egypt: prepare for your first consultation

Charter Law Firm3 min readUpdated:

A useful company formation consultation starts with a clear picture of the business you want to build. Before focusing on forms, put your proposed activities, ownership plans and outstanding questions in one short brief. This helps the discussion focus on your actual project.

Describe how the business will work

Explain what you plan to sell, who your customers will be and where the business will operate. Include online sales, imports, exports or a physical premises if they are part of the plan. Separate activities you will start immediately from those you may add later.

For example, a business selling its own products may raise different questions from one arranging sales for another supplier. A plain-language description is more helpful at this stage than choosing a company label without discussing the activity.

Record the partners’ proposed arrangement

Prepare a working summary of the people or businesses involved. Mark any points that have not yet been agreed, so the consultation can address them explicitly.

  • Who will participate, and what will each person contribute?
  • How do you expect ownership and management responsibilities to be divided?
  • Who will handle day-to-day decisions and discussions with suppliers?
  • What questions remain about a partner joining or leaving?

Gather what you already have

Bring your business brief, any proposed names, draft partner arrangements and relevant existing business documents. Make a list of missing information instead of delaying the discussion until every item is available. Ask how identification and other sensitive documents should be shared before sending them.

This is a preparation list for a conversation, not an incorporation filing checklist. GAFI’s incorporation guidance directs applicants to prepare documents according to the company’s legal form; check the current requirements for the structure being considered.

If you are instructing from outside Egypt

Identify the person or entity giving instructions and any legal, tax or accounting adviser already involved. List the questions that concern Egypt separately from those your overseas advisers are handling. This makes it easier to agree responsibilities and avoid gaps or duplicated work.

For an established company, also identify recurring needs such as supplier agreements and management decisions. Ask whether these should be addressed through a separate ongoing-support engagement, with clear deliverables, reporting arrangements and exclusions.

Leave with a defined next step

Ask which decisions you need to make, which requirements need to be verified and who will handle each action. Request a clear scope of work and fee proposal. Keep incorporation, activity-specific permissions and ongoing business obligations as separate discussion points so that the plan accounts for each.
